July 16, 2025, Bandung – “Communicating Across Cultures: What We Can Learn from Japan” was the topic of an interesting guest lecture given by the Communication Science Department at Universitas Komputer Indonesia (UNIKOM). As a component of the course taught by Ms. Tine Wulandari, S.I.Kom., M.I.Kom., this event was designed to help students better understand Japanese cultural values and how they affect everyday social interactions, communication, and work ethics.

Examining Japanese Culture and Communication Japan is well known for its distinctive cultural norms, which influence how people act and speak in social and professional contexts. Students learned more about:

the significance of nonverbal cues like bowing and displaying polite body language.

  • the idea of harmony, or “Wa,” and how it affects group dynamics.
  • the importance of “Omotenashi,” or Japanese hospitality, in both professional and personal contexts.
  • The importance of reading between the lines and using indirect communication (“Kuuki wo Yomu”).

The Communication Science Department would like to express its sincere appreciation to Ms. Erica Matano, B.A., for sharing her insightful expertise and personal experiences about Japanese communication and culture. Her knowledge gave students real-world examples and a greater understanding of cross-cultural relationships.

In addition to broadening the students’ scholarly horizons, this guest lecture gave them the critical intercultural communication skills they need in a world growing more interconnected by the day. We anticipate more thought-provoking activities that expand our students’ communication studies horizons!
