When it comes to global education, being able to speak English well is the most important thing. Because of this, the Communication Science Department at Unikom set up a three-day intensive TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) on May, 9-14 2025 preparation workshop for eighth-semester students. The goal of this program is to give students the skills and strategies they need to do well on the upcoming TOEFL test at Padjadjaran University in Jatinangor.
Students who want to study or work abroad must take the TOEFL test. The workshop was carefully planned to help students understand the test better and get ready for it. It covered all four parts of the test: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each section has its own problems, so it’s very important to get ready well. And for the instructor of this workshop is the lecturer from Communication Science Department, there was Tine Agustin Wulandari, M.I.Kom., and Yasundari, M.I.Kom.
The workshop started with a look at how the TOEFL is set up and what it looks like. Students learned about the kinds of questions they would be asked and how the scoring system worked. This basic knowledge is very important because it makes the test less scary and gives students the confidence to take it.
On the first day, students mostly worked on the listening and reading parts. Experienced teachers taught students how to take notes and summarize important points from audio materials, which is necessary for the listening part. In addition, interactive reading exercises helped students understand better by teaching them how to find main ideas and supporting details. The goal was not only to help students get used to the test’s format, but also to improve their overall English skills.
The second day was all about the speaking and writing parts of the TOEFL test. The workshop had practice essays and mock speaking tests that were very similar to the real thing. This helped students get a sense of how much time they would have to finish the tests. Instructors gave students helpful feedback, which is very helpful for improving their skills. Group discussions also helped students learn from each other by letting them share tips and ideas on how to communicate well, which is important for both writing and speaking.
The last day was all about how to take tests and how to deal with stress. Students learned how important it is to manage their time during the exam and took timed practice tests to get better at pacing themselves. Teachers stressed the importance of having a good attitude and knowing how to deal with stress, which helped students get ready for the test day both academically and mentally.
The three-day workshop also helped people feel like they were part of a community. They talked to each other and made connections that will help them after the workshop. It’s normal for people learning a language to feel nervous about standardized tests, but talking about your experiences can help ease these feelings.
Not only did the people who went to the workshop learn how to take the TOEFL test, but they also left with a renewed sense of confidence in their skills. This project by the Communication Science Department shows how important it is to get ready and get help along the way in school.
In the end, the TOEFL preparation workshop was a great experience for the students in their eighth semester. These kinds of programs are very important for helping students improve their skills so that they can confidently start their future academic and professional careers. The department’s dedication to helping students succeed is truly impressive and should be used as a model for other programs in the future.
